Thursday Conversations: “The Enemy Within, A Tale of Muslim Britain”
7th December 2017 @ 6:00 pmFree
Our guest in December is Baroness Sayeeda Warsi
Topic: ‘The Enemy Within, A Tale of Muslim Britain’
Britain has often found groups within its borders whom it does not trust, whom it feels have a belief, culture, practice or agenda which runs contrary to those of the majority. From Catholics to Jews, miners to trade unionists, Marxists to liberals and even homosexuals, all have at times been viewed, described and treated as ‘the enemy within’. Muslims are the latest in a long line of ‘others’ to be given this label. Baroness Warsi will unpick the history of the relationship between Islam and Britain and how it manifests in modern-day Britain.
Baroness Warsi is a Conservative peer, former cabinet minister, and lawyer. When appointed to the House of Lords she became its youngest member. She also became Britain’s first Muslim Cabinet Minister in 2010. Baroness Warsi was co-chair of the Conservative Party from 2010 to 2012, and served as Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and theMinister of State for Faith and Communities under David Cameron before her resignation in August 2014. She is Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Bolton, an Advisor to Georgetown University Washington DC and Visiting Professor at St Marys – the oldest Catholic university in the UK. In 2017 her first book was published, The Enemy Within: A Tale of Muslim Britain, billed as “a vital book at a critical time”.
