Imagine yourself in glorious Venice, striding out across St Mark’s Square for a concert of brilliant Vivaldi. Or think of yourself in the magnificent Baroque glories of the Leipzig Thomaskirche, ready to listen to the perfection of JS Bach at his finest. The Hanover Choir and Orchestra will transport you, without any tiresome queuing or airports, to just that place, all for a fraction of the price of a tourist ticket. If you haven’t heard the Vivaldi Gloria, it’s the superlative example of his greatest period, beaming with sunshine and joyfulness. It was written for one of the first ever celebrity charity concerts, supporting the orphanage for the illegitimate daughters of Venetian noblemen. The Bach Magnificat is another dazzling work, based on Luke’s gospel account of the Virgin Mary learning about her pregnancy. This is the work that influenced Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Verdi and dozens of other great musicians. Mendelssohn played Bach daily to Goethe whilst visiting in Weimar, and you too can be inspired by his vision.
